And I'm here with the CEO of Battle Bank, Frank Trotter. And for those of you who don't know about Battle Bank, it is the most unique kind of bank that you could possibly bank with. And I'm here with its leader who can tell us why that is the case. (00:28) TROTTER: I think we really designed our bank to answer questions that other banks don't answer. Rick and I joke that we can't compete with JPMorgan Chase and they can't compete with us. We focus on this group of people. It's a community bank, but it's not about geography. It's about aspiration and interests. And we built something where you have great rates on all your basic deposit products. You can deal in precious metals, which is what our community loves. We'll deal in them. We'll store them for you. If you want to borrow against them, that's great. And we give you some great options on your retirement accounts that other people just don't do. (01:05) PRINS: So basically, if you are involved in the commodity space in any way, you want to have an account with Battle Bank because you really feature something for everyone in one place. (01:14) TROTTER: Exactly. And a lot of the folks that are here at the symposium have been coming up and they were very excited, even if it's just a basic checking account. You go in the U.S. in particular, in Canada, it's the same thing. You get nothing on a checking account. Most of the savings accounts pay almost nothing. We're at about 3.35% APY for full checking. You have to say that again, full checking. We think that's fair for people. If you go to J.P. Morgan or Wells Fargo or any of the other big banks, it's 0.01. (01:45) PRINS: It's a phenomenal rate if you just want to keep your money before you buy that next commodity. Can you explain a little bit more about how people use you or can use you to buy commodities and use those commodities as collateral? (01:58) TROTTER: Sure, I'd be happy to. First of all, as I said, we deal in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. You can come onto our website, literally just say, I want to buy this many coins or this many ounces. We show you a price, you say yes or no, click, you're done. We will store that for you. And with a minimum collateral of $100,000, we will loan up to 50% of that value. You may need it to make another investment. You may need it to put a deck on the back of the house. It may just need general liquidity. Think about it, a home equity loan, but for your precious metals as collateral. And it's really great pickup. The thing we didn't see coming is we've actually had more metals delivered to us than cash. And that really speaks to what people want to do. They want to be able to borrow against those precious metals. (02:45) PRINS: And I should think it makes your growth as a bank that much more positive because now you have that more of the collateral. You're only lending up to 50%. That's a very solid financial position to be in. (02:55) TROTTER: And we are very conservative on lending. You look at a lot of the other institutions, they got 3,000 or 4,000 verticals. (03:02) PRINS: I don't know how you keep up with that. (03:04) TROTTER: We have some verticals we know, we understand. Can we make a mistake? Everybody can, but we've focused on some things that have highly conservative returns as well as some great security. (03:18) PRINS: That's fantastic. And for people who want to check you out and open an account, where should they go? Is that easy? (03:23) TROTTER: Oh, it's terribly hard. Www.battlebank.com. We're wide open now. You can come right in. You want to open an account, look around, log in when you get your account open. We have great mobile apps, so... Make it easy and we make it great for this community. (03:39) PRINS: Fantastic. Frank, thank you so much for your time and for everything you're doing. (03:42) TROTTER: Thank you very much. (03:44) PRINS: And for those of you tuning in, thank you so much for tuning in to the special episode about Battle Bank from Prinsights Global Spotlight. ---- Post text (verbatim, below the video) ---- Subtitle: Catch this exclusive Prinsights interview with a banking thought leader on how they're pioneering a new way for the industry to do business. Today, we're thrilled to welcome a brilliant leader in the banking industry, Frank Trotter who serves as the president of Battle Bank. Frank is a true veteran of his craft and has been involved in the banking business stretching back to 1981. In 1998, he became a co-founder of everbank.com, a national direct-to-consumer bank that was acquired by EverBank Financial in 2004. For those who are not familiar, Battle Bank works to make banking simpler, more rewarding and more personal. They work to go beyond the basics with access to foreign currencies, precious metals and self-directed retirement tools. Frank and I had the chance to catch up several months back at the Rule Symposium but the conversation is as relevant and timely as ever. In our discussion above, you'll discover: - What makes Battle Bank different from nearly any in the industry - Why their organization offers a new approach to investing in the commodity space - The surprising wrinkle that they didn't see coming (and makes their growth story exceptional) Go Deeper: Founders+ members latest September issue added to our model portfolio a recommendation for a company that owns a portfolio of gold and copper juniors which was assembled by a mining investor with a 30+ year track record who gets to them before the majors do. It's a brilliant way to tap into this exact trend and work toward unlocking the true potential.
